A collection of Juneteenth materials will be on display at the Meet Spot in the lobby of Geisel Library for the entire month of June. Traditional hand fans, family activity books, government documents, traditional cookbooks, themed pennants and flags will be available for browsing as we celebrate together!
Don’t miss our Juneteenth Songs of Celebration: Carillon Concert taking place at Geisel Library on June 20 at noon. You’re invited to contribute to the celebration by submitting song requests. Selections will include both new requests and favorites from past years, all played live on the Library’s rooftop chimes. To submit a request, drop it in the box at the Meet Spot in Geisel Library or email Scott Paulson at spaulson@ucsd.edu.
About Juneteenth
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, the observance of June 19 — also known in African American communities as “Emancipation Day,” “Jubilee Day,” and “Freedom Day” — marks a pivotal moment in history.
Throughout the month of June, UC San Diego will explore the significance of Juneteenth, celebrate Black excellence, and highlight ways all communities can observe, reflect, and educate in commemoration.
