HERSTORY: The Legal History of Chinese-American Women
Exhibit Opening and Lecture
Tuesday, May 15 • 5-6:30 p.m.
Geisel Library, Seuss Room

The UC San Diego Library is pleased to present a rare look at Chinese-American women’s history, told through landmark legal cases fought in supreme courts throughout the U.S. As an extension of this unprecedented exhibit, the Library is hosting a lecture to delve into these untold stories of female oppression and resistance. Guest speakers include:

  • Jack Fu, senior advisor, Overseas Community Affairs Council, Taiwan
  • Chang C. Chen (Ph.D., JD), curator of HERstory, law professor, attorney and former senator of Taiwan
  • Li-Min Chang, performing artist of Taiwan living in the U.S.
  • Margaret Wing-Peterson, co-president, San Diego Chinese Women’s Association

Drawn from the personal collection of Chang C. Chen, “HERSTORY” features rare photographs and case descriptions of efforts by Chinese-American women to gain legal standing in the U.S. Beginning in 1852, the exhibit documents women who fought for equal treatment in the eyes of the law, for citizenship and the right to public education. At a time of public debate around immigration and national identity, this exhibit sheds light on the brave women who fought for their rights, and, in doing so, helped shape a brighter future for younger generations. This event is free and open to the public.
