We invite students, faculty, and staff affiliated with UC San Diego to attend a one-day workshop to look at the big picture of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how it fits within the Health industry. This full-day workshop will provide an overview of Esri Web and Desktop GIS (ArcGIS Pro), entirely within the context of health & human services. It will include basic mapping, the use of online and enterprise portals, platform apps, and app creation, while examining a variety of health use cases and requirement. Matt Thomas and Canserina Kurnia from Esri will co-instruct the workshop.

Computers will be provided to participants for this workshop as certain software must be installed prior to the workshop.

Registration is required, as special permissions must be provided to attendees to access needed ArcGIS resources for the workshop.

Workshop Outline:

  1. Introduction & Web GIS (9:00 – 10:15 am):
    Look at the big picture of what GIS is and how it fits within the Health industry. This will include a hands-on component involving Mapping & Visualization and Sharing & Collaboration using ArcGIS Online and related tools.
  2. Data Sensitivity & ArcGIS Enterprise Overview (10:30 – 11:30 am):
    Discuss the nature of sensitive health data and HIPAA regulations that affect GIS usage, and the secure options that are available. We will also explore ArcGIS Enterprise, a cloud GIS environment deployed in your own infrastructure.

LUNCH 11:30 am-12:30 pm

  1. Analyzing Data (12:30 pm – 3:00pm):
    See examples of how analysis is used within GIS, and the kinds of discoveries it can produce. The hands-on component will include exploration of two apps—Insights for ArcGIS and Business Analyst Web.
  2. Field Data Collection (3:15 pm – 4:00 pm):
    Work through the process of generating and using surveys in Survey123, a form-centric field mobility tool with a geographic component. Analytical tools will also be examined to see how survey results can be monitored and used in real time.
  3. Communicate Results (4:00 pm – 5:00 pm):
    Look at different methods of which data and results can be shared with others.

Matt Thomas is a Solution Engineer at Esri in the Health & Human Services sector, helping health professionals apply GIS to their business.

 

Canserina Kurnia is a Solution Engineer for Esri Education sector team with main role to provide technical advice and assistance for key universities in advancing their GIS technology in research and teaching.
