All Day

In 2021, Juneteenth became the first new Federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983. The celebration dates back to a Texas order on June 19, 1865, that reinforced the emancipation of African American slaves. Juneteenth has become a nationwide celebration of freedom, Black culture and community pride.

Visitors can view Juneteenth children’s books, celebratory cookbooks, official government documents, Juneteenth flags and traditional paper fans that relay the holiday’s significance.

Do you have a Juneteenth song you want us to play on the Library chimes? A request box on the exhibit case will have song request slips to fill out. You can also email song requests to Scott Paulson at spaulson@ucsd.edu.

We are also interested in collecting your family’s favorite recipes for display in the cases. If you have a family favorite you would like displayed, please email Scott at the email address listed above. You are also welcome to include a family story involving the recipe along with your submission (optional).
