A Conversation with Author Rex Pickett ’76

On behalf of Audrey Geisel University Librarian Erik T. Mitchell, you are invited to join us for an in-person panel discussion featuring UC San Diego alumnus and Oscar-winning screenwriter and author Rex Pickett ’76. The discussion will highlight Pickett’s most recent novel, “The Archivist,” a murder mystery that takes a deep dive into the archiving world set in a fictional Geisel Library.

Joining Pickett in the discussion will be Brian E.C. Schottlaender, University Librarian Emeritus, UC San Diego and Caryn Radick, Digital Archivist, Rutgers University with University Librarian Mitchell moderating.

Copies of “The Archivist” will be available for purchase from the UC San Diego Bookstore at the event. The talk will be followed by a book signing and dessert reception.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rex Pickett is the critically-acclaimed author of the novel “Sideways,” which was adapted into the award-winning feature film directed by Alexander Payne. “Sideways” won over 350 plaudits from various critics and film organizations, received five Academy Award nominations and won for Best Adapted Screenplay, received seven Golden Globe nominations and won two for Best Screenplay and Best Musical or Comedy.

Rex is the author of two “Sideways” sequels and the screenwriter of “My Mother Dreams the Satan’s Disciples in New York,” which captured the 2000 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. Additionally, Rex has written and staged the “Sideways” play four times, most notably with three-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys) at the La Jolla Playhouse.

His most recent novel “The Archivist” was published in the fall of 2021 by Blackstone Publishing. A southern California native, Rex has written/directed two indie feature films, and the Rex Pickett Papers are held by UC San Diego Library’s Special Collections & Archives.
