Access to Copyrighted Items via HathiTrust Ends September 7

When the Library closed in March 2020 and we were unable to circulate physical materials, HathiTrust — in response to the COVID-19 emergency — initiated the Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS). This service provided digital access to more than 6.3 million in-copyright print titles held by UC libraries to UC San Diego students, faculty and staff.

As we reopen and resume providing access to our print collections, the conditions for the fair use of digital copies of these materials ends and so does our access to this service. On September 7, 2021, please return to accessing our print collection in the usual ways.

Public domain items will still be available for full-text search in the HathiTrust Digital Library. Library patrons may continue to access the 6.8 million HathiTrust items that are in the public domain or available through Creative Commons licensing. These titles are marked “Full View” in the online catalog at https://www.hathitrust.org. Because the University of California is a HathiTrust member, UC San Diego students, faculty and staff may login to HathiTrust using campus credentials (Business Systems, Student SSO, or Active Directory) and download full PDFs of those items.

If you need help with access or have other questions or concerns, please Ask a Librarian.
