As part of the Library’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, we are prioritizing supporting research and learning by securing or providing access to academically focused information resources and tools to all constituents in a timely and equitable manner. As a part of this work, Library employees reviewed current circulation policies and searched for ways in which we could adjust our circulation procedures to simplify renewals while also ensuring that users can request materials when needed.
Ultimately, the Library has decided to reduce the initial checkout period for all UC San Diego circulating print items to 30 days for all users while simultaneously activating automatic renewals beginning July 1, 2024. This will help ensure we can get our users the resources they need when they need them for their academic endeavors or interests.
What Exactly Has Changed
Affiliation | Current Initial Checkout Period | New Initial Checkout Period | Current Maximum Checkout Period | New Maximum Checkout Period |
Faculty, Staff, Post Docs, Visiting Scholars | 1 year | 30 days | 7 years | 5 years |
Graduate Students, Visiting Graduate Students | 1 year | 30 days | 7 years | 5 years |
Undergraduate Students | 90 days | 30 days | 1.75 years | 1 year |
Community Borrowers | 28 days | 30 days | 7 months | 1 year |
Special Affiliates | 90 days | 30 days | 1.75 years | 1 year |
How This Will Work
- If an item has not been requested by another user, the item will automatically renew for another 30 days up to the designated maximum checkout period based on user affiliation.
- Users will receive a notification if an item they have checked out has been requested, alerting them of the upcoming due date.
These changes will not affect items received through resource sharing (Interlibrary Loan, San Diego Circuit) as those terms are set by the lending institution.
Know that you will need an item longer than 30 days? Speak with a staff member or contact us at LibraryBorrowing@ucsd.edu to discuss options.
