Female initiation, rite to mark a young woman's first menstruation. Young woman, who has just left ceremonial seclusion at first menstruation, is seated beneath display of shell rings, woman standing over her fastens something gift seated woman's neck. Pan of onlooking crowd of women and children, several women holding infants. Closeup of seated woman, who wears necklaces and armbands. Her hair has been cut very short. Older woman hands clay bowl of food to smiling younger woman, who passes it to the seated woman, who takes a sip. Woman holds small child in a large decorated netbag (bilum). Miscellaneous shots of people in village.
