The rhinoceros hornbill. The Bird Park, Santa Catalina Island, California
Back
Inscription | A native of Malaya and largest of the hornbill family, these birds are very rare and seldom seen even in the wild state. Papa Hornbill seals his mate up in the hollow of a tree during nesting time, feeding her through a small hole big enough for his beak. No chance for Mama Hornbill to neglect her household duties or fly off to Reno for a divorce. The hornbills feed on fruit and meat and are the most unique and interesting pair of birds in the Santa Catalina Island Bird Park. The Rhinoceros Hornbill, "Linn's" |
