Francis Parker Shepard (1897-1985) was frequently called the "Father of Marine Geology" based on his work and teaching while he was a professor of submarine geology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His career in geology had two periods: structural geology and mountains, and marine geology, which he called submarine geology.
