Caring for individuals with either type 1 or type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) requires the coordination and participation of a multidisciplinary team. Central to the success of this team are a number of factors including: patient enthusiasm, participation, and input. Team members often consist of, but are not limited to, a primary care physician, diabetes educator, nutritionist, and psychologist. However, despite the best efforts of the patient and primary team members complications may arise. When this happens, subspecialists such as neurologists, nephrologists and ophthalmologists may be essential for effective management. The goals of therapy for type 1 and type 2 DM are to eliminate the symptoms of hyperglycemia, reduce or eliminate the long-term microvascular and macrovascular complications of DM and allow the patient to achieve as normal a lifestyle as possible. Essential to attaining these goals, is establishing good glucose control which may be obtained with a variety of measures currently available
