Liao Yiwu is a poet, novelist, actor, screen writer and musician who was a political activist in China during his youth. He now lives in exile in Germany. This photograph was taken in NYC at Rise Up: Tiananmen's Legacy of Freedom and Democracy which commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident in Beijing on June 4, 1989. The event was a part of the PEN World Voices Festival.
