Women chatting with a nurse outside the Women's Ward of the Boyd Memorial Clinic
- Collection
- Description
-
The wife of one of the Presbyterian missionaries was a doctor and started the Boyd Memorial Clinic in Southwest Bay which is still used widely today. Here, women wait their turn to see the Medical Assistant or Nurse posted there. Located at Wintua, these technicians visited the other Bay villages regularly to treat residents and give health lectures. One lecture on family planning was attended only by men, while women listened outside the hall through the bamboo walls. In the 1970's no woman was allowed to receive family planning without her husband accompanying her.
'Planti pikinini makem planti wok long smol sista' (A women's ward family planning poster: Lots of children make a lot of work for their small older sisters). Local women chatting with a clinic nurse who grew up in the area. The women are eager to educate themselves about better health care. - Creation Date
