- Description
-
Oxygen, argon, and some trace gases are measured with a Hiden HPR-40 membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MIMS) at the Ellen Browning Scripps Pier. Data are measured approximately each minute. Raw ion current values are provided here. The concentration of dissolved oxygen (relative to saturation) depends on the rates of photosynthesis and respiration as well as physical injection from the atmosphere. The concentration of argon (relative to saturation) depends on physical injection only. Thus the ratio of oxygen to argon provides a meaningful measure of the oxygen excess or deficit that is due to biology alone. These values are often used to model net community production.
