Approximately 10 patrol reports, with related correspondence. Includes reports from administrative years 1953/54 and 1954/55. PATROL OFFICERS: Martin, F. J.; Wearne, J. M.; Murphy, D. J. AREAS PATROLLED: Sepik, Nindepolye, Kumun, Wingei, Kaboibus, Yangoru.
This volume consists of a series of observations regarding the overall infrastructure, demographics, and environmental features of the Yangoru region of the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea from 1953 to 1956. Comprised of diverse types of terrain, wildlife, and crops, the region encompassed and represented the different types of natural resources that were integral to the local diet, including sago, yams, coconuts, and tomatoes. Additionally, pigs constituted a huge part of the local diet in some parts of the Sepik and were particularly valued for ceremonies and sacrifices. One patrol officer noted the procedure for the exchange of pigs. Patrol officers also observed cultural practices in the region, such as the local tradition of “bride-price,” a type of local dowry, and the local practice of the menstruation ceremony. The steps of the menstruation ceremony are described in detail within this volume. - Creation Date
