Journal of a voyage from New York to San Francisco aboard the extreme clipper ship Golden Eagle
- Description
-
Manuscript journal by Charles R. Swain, possibly a mate, recording a voyage from New York, around the Horn to San Francisco during a period of 217 days. The captain was Ellsworth A. Luce. Swain records weather, position, ships sighted, sails set, and events on board, during a difficult trip. Bad storms in the Atlantic made for an eighty-five day run to the Horn, followed by an arduous three months to round it. She lost her fore and main yards, had her bulwarks stove, and spent six days under bare poles. By the time she reached Tulcahuano fifteen of her crew were sick or incapacitated and she was desperately short of water. She left a week later and was in San Francisco a month after that. This journal was later used by one John Swain for listing payments made by the Holmes Hole Marine Railway from 1866 to 1875
