Victor D. Vacquier, Jr., injects a sea urchin to induce the release of gametes. At right, sea urchin sperm are shown detaching from the egg surface in the seconds following fusion of one sperm with the egg. An enzyme (discovered at Scripps) coming out of the fertilizing egg digests the bonds between the supernumerary sperm and the egg surface.
