Vacated Plantation House
- Collection
- Description
-
Abandoned store at Lamango plantation. The plantation was taken over by South West Bay locals after a demonstration shortly before Independence. Alfred Oupane, the overseer, store manager and cash crop buyer, moved to another plantation on the north coast of Malakula. The Lamango demonstration generally helped hasten independence from the two colonial powers. In the early 1970s this store was the main source for almost anything bought with cash: tools, canned goods, cloth, primus stoves, kerosine, and even French bread (twice a week).
