Manuscript letter by Englishman Herbert Vacher during an around-the-world trip, mailed to his sister Annie in Surrey. Includes description of his trek from Nevada to Truckee (where he hiked on snowshoes), thence to Dutch Flats where he explored the old hydraulic mining ruins, describing the environmental degradation caused therefrom: "I need hardly say that this sort of work completely spoils the face of the country turning it into barren wastes, of gravel pits & unnatural cliffs of ballast & sand." After a steamer voyage to San Diego he described the El Cajon Valley, where he stayed at the Thomas Ranch
