Portrait of Robert Gordon Sproul (1891-1975) the 11th president of the University of California from 1930-1958. Good teaching was his first concern, but in the depression years when University legislative appropriations were reduced 25 per cent, he sought unceasingly for private funds to maintain research. The faculty renown attained in this period advanced the national ranking of the University in its number of distinguished departments from tenth place in 1934 as judged by the American Council on Education to second place behind Harvard in 1942. Circa 1935.
