Stocked shelves in the Cooperative Society store -- The idea of cooperative societies or associations, first introduced in the New Hebrides in 1963, traveled fast. By 1981 many cooperatives sold a wide range of items to villagers. Cooperatives also buy and re-sell cash crops like copra in cocoa growing areas, many operate their own fermenting sheds and driers.
