Two postcards depicting the U.S.S. Bennington and related scenes after a boiler explosion at San Diego killed sixty- six men and wounded nearly every one else on board on July 21, 1905. An inset on one of the postcards shows John Henry Turpin, an African American sailor (later Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy) who survived the Bennington explosion as well as the more famous explosion of the U.S.S. Maine in 1898

One of the postcards is addressed on verso to Miss Agnes Fludner of Hollister, California, with handwritten message : "Dear Agnes, Just a month today since Explosion took place. The Officers and crew of the Italian Cruiser held service at cemetery on Point Loma today and decorated the graves."
