A formation of civilians on military training exercises marches forward in three files along a windbreak of bare trees planted in a row. In the first rank the central man in a blue jacket carries a framed image of Mao Zedong on his field trip to Anyuan. To the right a man with a Mao badge on his dark jacket carries a rifle over one shoulder, a long white bag of field rations over the other, and a bag of ammunition at his waist suspended from straps around his neck. A woman on the left has a Mao badge on her pink jacket and carries a red medic's bag. In the rank behind them, a man holds a red flag. A man in army uniform stands to the right of the formation with a bullhorn to his mouth while holding up the Red Little book in his other hand. In the background behind him a red sign bears in gold letters Mao's quotation, "Bei zhan bei huang wei ren min (Prepare for defense and prepare against natural disasters for the people)." The backdrop consists of another windbreak, power lines, farmers' fields, and rural residences
