Photo taken on July 17, 1971 on a visit to a May Seventh Cadre School 五七幹校 on the eastern outskirts on Beijing. During this phase of the Cultural Revolution, urban intellectuals (notice the eyeglasses), including professors, were sent to rural settings to do rigorous physical labor for extended periods of time. This, it was said, would allow them to "learn from the laboring masses."
