This data collection consists of occupational employment data by industry for the period 1983-1998. The historical matrix time series covers 295 detailed occupations in 186 detailed industries. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has been developing industry-occupation matrices presenting the distribution of occupational employment by industry since the mid-1960's. A time series based on these matrices was not developed until 1994, because of concerns about the comparability of matrix data over time. Many users of occupational employment data by industry, however, require historical employment data for a variety of analyses. In response to the need expressed in requests from the public for such data, a national industry-occupation matrix time series was developed in 1994 that covered the 1983-93 time period. In 1996, the matrix time series was updated to cover the 1983-95 time period; in 1998, to cover the 1983-96 period; and in 2000, the matrix time series was updated to cover the 1983-98 period. No data is presented for either detailed occupations or detailed industries that do not have a comparable definition in every year of the series. The time series for each occupation covers wage and salary workers by industry and economy-wide data for self-employed workers and unpaid family workers. Prior to 1972, the matrices used the occupational classification of the 1960 decennial census. From 1972 to 1980, the occupational classification of the 1970 decennial census was used in constructing industry-occupation matrices. Since 1980, data from the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) surveys have been used to construct matrices. However, the OES survey classification changed significantly in 1983 and matrices constructed with OES survey data prior to that date are not comparable with those prepared using OES data collected since 1983. In addition to occupational classification changes, industrial classification changes were instituted in 1972, 1977, and 1987 reflecting revisions to the Standard Industrial Classification.
