Huang Xiang (R) is considered to be one of the most important post-cultural revolution poets of China. He is also a master calligrapher. He has a long history of political problems in China and consequently has been living in exile in the U.S. for many years. Liao Yiwu (L) is a poet, novelist, actor, screen writer and musician who was a political activist in China during his youth. He now lives in exile Germany. This photograph was taken in NYC at Rise Up: Tiananmen's Legacy of Freedom and Democracy which commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Incident in Beijing on June 4, 1989. The event was a part of the PEN World Voices Festival.
