’Ausisile is the most common form of panpipe orchestra in the Sinlalagu area. An octet. They are often played in performances at feasts.
Maewaa was the big man for the feast where this performance was recorded. Gilo are bamboo stamping tubes, usually played in duets. To sulea mae is, in this case by Ibaa, singing an ’ai’imae ancestral chant about fighting in the past. Waariu Rhythm Boys is Keesing's facitious reference to these players from the Waariu area.
Maewaa was from Furii’au.
Ibaa was from Furingudu and the son of Larikeni. He sings at the feast an ’ai’imae ancestral chant.
Gilo (aka ’aubasiakwa) are stamping tubes, usually played as duets, but occasionally solo.
Sulea mae means to tell or sing a story about fighting in the past.
Ibaa is the youngest son of Larikeni, from Furingudu, on the coastal slope above Sinalagu.
Also included is part of a kwarii’ota (piece of betel nut) speech, sometimes given in the middle of musical performances. The speech maker holds up the betel nut while talking, and often gives a small gift to the musicians.
Recording is a continuation of Keesing Cassette Tape 084.
