Yue Minjun singing the blues

This photograph is of Yue Minjun singing the blues for friends at Kaiyi's Kitchen, an artist bar and cafe owned by Lao Yugong, one of Yue Minjun's closest friends who is from the local Bai minority group. It is not a coincidence, for me, that Yue Minjun sings the blues after drinking "baijiu" at social gatherings; because like the blues singer, he is a trickster figure who as singer and artist "laughs to keep from crying", celebrates life amidst adversity and whose subversive humor provides implicit social critique.
