The Baird was 134 feet long. She was a large converted Army sea-going tug and has a cruising range of approximately 5,800 miles at a speed of 10.5 knots. Electric and hydraulic winches carrying 5/16-inch and 3/16-inch wire rope are installed. One is capable of carrying 40,000 feet of cable tapered from 3/4-inch to 3/8-inch -- a cable long enough to work in the very deepest parts of the ocean. There are accommodations for 34 scientists and crew members.
