Gallego nació el 28 de octubre de 1913 en Madrid. Su padre era anarquista que pasó a la clandestinidad en Andalucía, muriendo después durante la Guerra Civil. Recuerda haber visto a su padre solo una vez cuando tenía ocho años. Gallego fue criada por su madre y su abuela. Comenzó a militar en 1935 y trabajó como enfermera de hospital durante la Guerra Civil Española. Tras ser denunciada por un falangista, fue encarcelada el 14 de abril de 1939, junto con su madre y su abuela. Gallego describe las terribles condiciones de hacinamiento en las cárceles de mujeres durante la era franquista, que ella experimentó de primera mano. Tras su liberación se trasladó a Andalucía y luego a Barcelona en la década de 1960, donde retomó su trabajo como enfermera, jubilándose finalmente a los 70 años.
Gallego was born on October 28, 1913 in Madrid. Her father was an anarchist who went into hiding in Andalusia, later dying during the Civil War. She recalls seeing her father only once when she was eight years old. Gallego was raised by her mother and grandmother. She started to "militar" in 1935, and worked as a hospital nurse during the Spanish Civil War. After being denounced by a falangist, she was incarcerated on April 14, 1939, along with her mother and her grandmother. Gallego describes the horrible conditions of overcrowded female prisons under the Francoist era, which she experienced firsthand. Upon release she moved to Andalusia and then later to Barcelona in the 1960s, where she resumed work as a nurse, finally retiring at age 70
