“I love the desert, nice and warm.” Jim talks about living on a boat at one point (“People living on boats are the best people in the world”), having two children—one a C.P.A. and the other married to a man who does scrap work for GTE and Spring.
“In five years, I’ll probably be at some other bombing range. They’re closing bases everywhere.” “I do what I want to do…first thing I do in the morning is get up and watch the news. I have two TVs, so I can watch two news.” Summers are very hot. Campbell describes highlights of different flats on the bombing range—“On flat 13 are vehicles from 1976, ’78, pickups they’re taken out there and destroyed…they’ve made a scrap heap 50 feet high, 250 feet around over by Palo Verde.” Drops 7, 8, and 11 are also touched upon. “In the summer you can stay 2 or 3 days at a time. One guy had a dresser, bed and table then one of the range runners went out and set fire to it.”
Jim’s knowledge of the different drops in the desert helps visualize how Slab City is only one drop among many in this area.
Jim’s story about watching Public Television is also on this tape. - Creation Date
