Yang Lina (1972) is an internationally acclaimed Chinese female independent documentary and feature film director. She graduated from the Art Academy of the People's Liberation Army and danced and acted in many ballets, plays and films for the PLA. Later she became an independent film director and acted in Jia Zhangke's famous film Platform (2000). Lina has ties to many important cultural groups in Beijing. This photograph was taken in her apartment in Beijing when I first met her with her former boyfriend Xu Xing, an important writer who lived in exile in Europe after the Tiananmen Square Incident of June 4, 1989. Lina’s Old Men (1999) is considered a classic in China’s new documentary film movement, and her feature film Longing for the Rain (2013) is the first Chinese film to explore women’s sexual desires and erotic fantasies.
