A journal of a voyage to the Pacific Ocean, in the schooner Brothers of New York manuscript
- Description
-
Manuscript log kept by American merchant mariner Donald Mackay. The volume consists chiefly of Mackay's account of a voyage from New York as far as Manila, aboard the schooner Brothers, then aboard a Spanish vessel to Calcutta (April 17, 1809 - April 5, 1811). The volume continues with a separate account of a voyage from Calcutta to Philadelphia aboard the ship Atlas. At the end is Mackay's log and journal of a voyage aboard the Levi Dearbourn, under Captain Simon F. Thom, from New York to Portsmouth, England (March 28, 1812, with arrival at Portsmouth on May 24). On May 31, 1812 Mackay learns of the outbreak of the War of 1812, noting "an Embargo by the British government on all American Vessels in consequence of a declaration of war on the part of the United States." In the course of the main voyage Mackay visits Brazil, Tongatapu, the Fiji Islands, Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Fanning's Islands, Palmyra, the Mariana Islands, Guam, various islands of the Philippines, and elsewhere, in search of trade goods. The logbook includes substantial journal entries by Mackay, describing the places his visited as well as important incidents during his travels. A folding hand-drawn chart depicting the Brothers' route through the Tonga archipelago and the Fiji Islands is attached to the front pastedown endpaper of the volume
