Bladder cancer patient experience: educating and empowering patients

We licensed rights to "A patient's guide to bladder cancer, " by Dr. Khurshid Guru, and set up a pipeline to distribute those materials, and materials derived from his book, to patients' MyChart1 account via an Epic integration. As such, we achieved the intially state goal to "develop a curriculum that improves the experience of bladder cancer patients at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center via disease specific educational resources". Further, we incorporated the matierals in a way that "enhanced, or at least does not disturb provider workflow". We were able to deply our new materials and distribution pipeline prior to submission of the ISP. We are still working on the video content we had initially envisioned. The workflow we established for the written materials will accommodate distribution of video URLs, and we are in contact with UCSD Health marketing and branding teams about video creation. Lessons learned on this project have broad applicability to other patient education initiatives, IT integrations, and intellectual property negotiations. The lessons transcend specialty or patient population. Next steps include creating video content, quantifying the impact of our intervention, and expanding this IT integration to other departments within and beyond UCSD
