- Description
-
Fish densities obtained from ecological surveys that aims to assess differences on the composition and structure of the fish community associated with the kelp forest and rocky reef ecosystem, using visual censuses with scuba dive equipment by researchers and students of Centro de Investigación Científica y Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE).

The sampling consisted of underwater visual censuses performed by scuba divers carrying out belt transects of 30 meters length (verified with tape measure) and a window of 2x2 meters of amplitude (30 × 2 m, assessment unit: 60 m2). For each locality, 6 transects were done. In the case of the kelp forest ecosystem, three transects were done in the benthic zone, and three in the midwater zone. The midwater position was weighted by the depth of the sampling site; 4-6 m from the bottom if the depth in the site is less than 10 m and 6-8 m if the depth is greater than 10 m. In the case of Rocky reef ecosystem all transects were done in the benthic zone. Transects were made trying to keep the same direction and speed, and changing direction between transects to avoid pseudoreplicate. To record the species and their sizes, acrylic boards and plastic paper (Duracopy) were used. All transects were performed between 08:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
