Photograph of Huang Rui (R) and his Japanese girlfriend (L) was taken at a Xing Xing reunion in the 798 Art Factory in Beijing in December, 2002. Huang Rui was a founding member of the experimental underground art group Xing Xing and a designer for poet Bei Dao’s literary journal Jintian. He lived for many years in Japan. When he returned to Beijing, he became a major advocate of the 798 Art Zone in Beijing and was largely responsible for the Chinese government designating it as the first government protected art district in China.
