Carrie Prudence Winter Kofoid (1866-1942) was married to Charles Atwood Kofoid, a central figure in establishing the Marine Biological Station of San Diego, later the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Before her marriage to Kofoid, Carrie had traveled to Hawaii under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and taught at Kawaiaha'o Seminary in Honolulu from 1890-1893. Her insights on Hawaiian culture and the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy were portrayed in essays, correspondences, photographs and sketches.
