Geiger counters are used to detect radiation usually gamma and beta radiation, in this case it was used to detect radiation after atomic nuclear testing near Bikini Island. Operation Ivy, the U.S. first test of a thermonuclear bomb, preceded the Capricorn expedition. 1952.
