"Nancy issuing salt for food. The bags are carried by tump lines. We've seen these women carry 4 gallon drums of kerosene in them strapped to their heads and hanging down their backs. The same bag is also used for carrying babies, though not simultaneously. That bag of potatoes brought three tablespoons of salt, she was more than happy, and so were we, except its sweet potatoes, and this doesn't mean the kind of brown yams you buy there, sweet potatoes are white just like Irish potatoes except they ate mushier and SWEET. Yams here have purple skins which extends into the yam for about 1/4 inch and the rest is white. When boiled they turn into mush, we don't eat them. They also have no taste. Taro is edible if roasted whole in the fire, tapioca we haven't tried yet because the season isn't on yet, and bananas, dozens of varieties, particularly cooking bananas." MSS187, Box 44, Folder 9.
