El Capitan - Santa Fe's new twice-a-week flyer is the only transcontinental streamliner dedicated entirely to the service of chair-car passengers. It makes the 2227-mile journey between Chicago and Los Angeles as swiftly as the fastest luxury stream-liners-in just 39 1/2 hours. El Capitan carries 5 or more ultra-modern air-conditioned stainless steel cars behind an 1800 H.P. Diesel-electric locomotive, capable of 120 miles per hour - including a baggage-chair car, beautifully appointed 52-seat chair cars, with spacious lounge-dressing rooms; a special car for women and children, and a unique Fred Harvey lunch counter-tavern diner.
