Journal of the ship Union, from Salem to Canton and return : manuscript
- Description
-
Manuscript log book of a China trade voyage from Salem, Massachusetts to Canton, kept by an American sailor. According to Fairburn, the Union was a 250-ton ship built in 1802 for Crowninshield, Nichols, Hodges, and Peirce. This would have been her maiden voyage, with George Hodges, one of the owners, sailing as her captain. She was wrecked entering Salem Habor with a cargo of pepper in 1817. The journal contains descriptions of events on board, position, weather, ships spoken, nautical evolutions, places sighted, etc. Includes seven pages recording entry into Chinese waters. The latter part of the volume is taken up with accounts from 1816 through the 1820s. Laid in at the back of the book is a separately bound 42-page quire containing accounts and notes made at Salem between 1785 and 1796. The accounts contain many references to the Adams family, including "Brother Josiah Adams" who was likely the keeper of the present China trade journal. The first page of the journal is stamped "J. Adams" in several places
