Land clearing: men clear trees and bushes from rocky land, preparing for construction
- Collection
- Description
-
These men were hired to clear a parcel of land across the road from the Kiriwina Guest Lodge. This land was too rocky to be used as a garden. At the center of the frame with red hibiscus flowers in hair is Mowaroka, who hosted Hutchins during his brief visit to Kiriwina in September 1973. Mowaroka and his wife Kitimwalusa named their first son Edwin. In the yellow shirt with an axe over his right shoulder is Mogiovyeka. Mogiovyeka became Edwin Hutchins' best friend and putative brother during the 1975 - 1976 project.
