Research oceanographer and lecturer in the Marine Life Research Group (MLRG) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who has worked at the Institution since earning her Ph.D. from the Institution in marine ecology in 1969. Within MLRG, she studied the distribution and ecology of oceanic phytoplankton (microscopic plant life). Among her many achievements from 1976 to the beginning of 1982, she served on the five-member California Fish and Game Commission. Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown, she was the first woman, the first Ph.D., and the first expert in marine science to serve on the commission during its more than 100-year history.
