The film directors Shi Tou and Cui Zi'en are in the second row (from the left) and the film director Zhang Yuan is in the second row (number four from the left). Shi Tou is a lesbian, artist, actor, and director of Dyke March (2004) and Woman of Fifty Minuets (2006). Cui Zi'en is an internationally renowned gay science fiction writer and film director of more than thirteen underground films, including the queer classics Queer China, ''Comrade" China (2008). Zhang Yuan is an important Urban Generation or Sixth Generation film director. His film East West Palace (1996) is now seen to have been to be the first Chinese film of recent decades to focus on gay life.
Chinese First Gay and Lesbian Film Festival were considered controversial. Nevertheless, the Chinese government allowed Beijing University to host controversial events like this because it considered Beijing University a "liberated" zone for some experimentation. All of the films for this festival were allowed to be screened, but the day for academic discussion the issues surrounding gay and lesbian films were canceled. - Creation Date
