My objectives for this project therefore included becoming familiar with practical patient care and communication skills: I hoped to better understand how to manage the debilitating, dehumanizing symptoms that often pervade the end of life; to learn techniques for helping families identify goals of care; and to learn how all providers can help ensure a "good" death. To accomplish these goals, I spent three weeks shadowing the inpatient palliative care unit team at Jacobs Medical Center, two weeks shadowing the palliative psychiatrist at Jacobs, and three weeks shadowing the inpatient palliative care consult team, an outpatient palliative care physician, the palliative care chaplain, and a palliative care home support nurse at Rady
