Vinmari and Kaising put lap lap on heated stones
- Collection
- Description
-
The traditional meal, lap lap, is a pancake-shaped pudding of grated tuber roots (taro, yam sweet potato, cassava) or banana sweetened with coconut milk and fortified with pieces of meat or fish. Wrapped in leaves, it is cooked for several hours in a hole lined with heated stones. In pre-mission days, lap lap preparation was done separately by either men or women and the two sexes ate from different fires. Today lap lap cooking often involves most household members, although men are more likely to prepare feast lap laps and women are responsible for daily cooking.
