Sociocultural anthropologist Phillip Newman worked among the Gururumba and Awa in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. His collection contains reel-to-reel field recordings from his work with the Awa in 1964-65 and 1970, as well as recordings by David Hayano while he did his field work with Awa speakers of the remote Tauna village in 1969.
The recordings were digitized through support by a Recordings at Risk grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The grant program is made possible by funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. - Creation Date
