In 1962, Stan Phillips, a motion picture and audiovisual consultant for the company Western Cine, embarked on a spoken word poetry record project. The project centered on Black Mountain School authors reading their own works, taking photographic portraits for the record, and writing their own jacket notes. James Broughton, Jess Collins, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, and Louis Zukofsky taped readings of their poetry and sent the recordings to Phillips. Phillips and sound engineer Herman Urschel began to edit and compile the recordings. In late 1963, Phillips, who had also been working as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver, developed plans to start his own film script business and left Western Cine. Western Cine gave the Poet Record Project to Phillips to finish. After trouble with communication between Phillips and some of the poets, financial issues concerning the project, and Phillips' other work, the project eventually lost momentum and was never released. The collection of recordings was donated to the UC San Diego Library in 2019.
