The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Physical Laboratory records document the activities of the research unit; including administrative files, instrument and platform development, vessels and submersibles, research images, cruises and expeditions, personnel, launching ceremonies, anniversaries, and other events.
After the conclusion of WWII, new discoveries from the University of California Division of War Research (UCDWR) left additional scientific questions unanswered. As a result, in 1946 the Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) was established to continue research and multidisciplinary cooperation. It was one of the earliest research units at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) explores a wide variety of research focused on a greater understanding of our oceans. This work also includes the development of new and specialized instruments, equipment, and research platforms. Some examples of this are: R/P FLIP, Deep Tow vehicle, Oceanographic Research Buoy (ORB), Remote Underwater Manipulator (RUM), and the Albacore Dimus. Today, the Laboratory consists of individual research groups, headed by principal investigators. As part of its collaborative research, MPL receives project funding from various sponsors. - Creation Date
