Description

The Sixth College Office of the Provost records document the administration, policies and procedures, educational programs and courses, committees, campus buildings, student affairs, and significant events. This includes administrative files, curriculum planning, outreach and event materials, and photographs.

Sixth College was founded in 2001 and welcomed its first incoming class in 2002. The mission of the College is to create an inclusive community dedicated towards fostering curiosity and critical inquiry into the interconnectivity of art and technology and how they shape cultures. This interdisciplinary approach can be seen through the Culture, Art, and Technology (CAT) writing and experimental learning program at Sixth College. The planning of the college officially began with the formation of the Sixth College Planning Committee in 1999. Prior to this, the last college founded at UC San Diego was Eleanor Roosevelt College in 1988. Sixth College’s founding provost, Gabriele Wienhausen, was appointed in 2000 and continued work to establish the college. In Fall 2020, Sixth College began its phased move to its new home at the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood (NTPLLN). Prior to this, the College was located in the Pepper Canyon area.

At UC San Diego, a college gets a numerical name based on the order of its establishment, until its formal name is decided. Over the years there has been several proposals to change the name of Sixth College, following UC San Diego’s tradition of naming the colleges after significant individuals. However, to this day, none of the proposals have been adopted.

Provosts of Sixth College have included: Gabriele Wienhausen (2000-2007), David Jordan (Interim, 2007-2008), F. Richard Moore (Interim, 2008), Naomi Oreskes (2008-2011), Daniel Donoghue (2012-2017), Ann Craig (Interim, 2017-2018), and Lakshmi Chilukuri (2018-current).
